Skin Care Tip: Hydration and Your Skin
|
submitted by James L. Baker, M.D., M.P.H., Sterling, MA USA
Tip description / details: Many people do not realize that staying well hydrated enhances what is known medically as "turgor." Keeping your body properly hydrated allows the skin (and the underlying tissues) to be more smooth, lustrous, and healthy. Think of a time when you were ill and couldn't keep up with your fluid needs for a few days - remember how sallow your skin looked, and much more pronounced any lines or wrinkles appeared? In fact, good skin turgor is one of the major clues physicians look for in ascertaining a patient's overall health. Usually, no special fluids are required, just plenty of water!
Ingredients: Ordinary water or mineral water in most cases, or drinks containing electrolytes and glucose if you've been ill.
How to prepare: No special preparations are necessary.
How to use: If you are drinking enough, you'll see the benefit - and (as long as your ikdneys are healthy and you don't have medically required fluid restrictions), you will simply urinate away any excess.
Results (observed by submitter): When I treat patients by giving intravenous fluid replacement (usually a liter or two, sometimes more), I can often see their color return and and their natural contours and glow start to come back.
Costs involved: None
