Skin Care Review: Accutane

by K. Bell, Millen, GA USA

Rating
Good

Benefits
Commpletely wiped-out Acne

Drawbacks
Dehidration, mild to medium Depression, limited sun exposure

Details
I started taking Accutane when I was fourteen. I had been experiencing what would be considered severe acne since I was Twelve and was desperate to find anything that would help. Those with severe acne know that very few things do. And, I have to admit, it worked extremely well. Within 2 month my face was clear, and, after six months, I had no visible signs of acne, save a few persistent scars. However, this did not come without a price. The two pill-a-day regiment cost around $300 dollars a month, not to mention the regular bloodtests that have to be conducted. Also, accutane severely dehydrated me. I admit, at fourteen, I probably didn't drink water like I should of. However, I was so dehydrated on the regiment that I had to use moisturizers daily to help keep the pealing manageable. I would try to keep my face from getting wet in the shower to keep it from pealing so bad while I was at school. I also did experience a medium degree of depression while I was on the regiment. I was happy to be rid of the acne, but I also cut myself off from my friends and missed a disturbing number of school-days. I can remember lying in bed some mornings trying to find a reason to get up or even keep living. However, I did make it through the therapy, and it did make me acne free, at least for a while. The acne did come back, but unlike before, it was manageable. I did get back on Accutane to try to clear it up again (just for a month) but it came back. I know this review seems very one sided, and don't get me wrong, the accutane worked marvelously at riding me of my acne, I went from being absolutely horrible to be normal (most people never really have trouble again, I was just an exception). But I just wanted people to know that it’s not perfect. It DOES have side-effects and they ARE invasive on your life, especially the depression. I’m not saying you shouldn't take accutane, just be sure you know what you’re getting yourself into, and please, take it only as a last resort, especially if you are young like I was. Puberty is hard on its own. The last thing you need is something clinically proven to cause depression during this time of your life.

Conclusions
Take only as a last resort

Price (paid by reviewer)
$300 a month
