Skin Care Review: Retin-A
|
by Jill Grant
Rating Excellent
Benefits
Long-term anti-aging effects with use of Retin-A (Tretinoin topical) are astounding.
Drawbacks
1/2 hour wait to apply after cleansing, or I will peel and turn red.
Details I began using Tretinoin topical as Retin-A for acne when it was first released in the 1980's. Later, everyone discovered the anti-aging benefits. After 30+ years of use EVERY OTHER DAY, and avoiding direct sun exposure, my skin still has very few wrinkles - amazing. I began saving money and buying generic Tretinoin topical when the Retin-A patent expired. Now, I use the strongest version (0.1%) of Tretinoin.
KEY: In order to prevent reddening and peeling, I only use a pea sized amount every other day AND wait at least 1/2 hour after cleansing BEFORE applying, AND I always apply moisturizer. I do not use it around my eyes.
NOTES: Although initial reddening and peeling is to be expected during the first 2-4 weeks of use, I wonder how many people are adversely affected by Tretinoin simply because they're applying it too soon after washing. For me, it's a hard and fast rule to wait. If I wait, all is well. Otherwise, I will experience the same peeling and red skin many complain about.
Conclusions
I strongly recommend trying Tretinoin & following packaging/dermatologist directions.
