Skin Care Review: Microdrmabrasion plus Glycolic Peels

by joss, NY USA

Rating
Satisfactory

Benefits
Smoother skin, fewer break outs, less dry

Drawbacks
skin became red and swollen on fourth treatment

Details
I have dry skin which is slightly discolored around the forehead area. I am prone occassional break outs and my nose has some small blackheads on it. I wanted to improve my skin's quality and help resolve some of these problems. Upon their recommendation, I opted for microdermabrasion combined with 30%-40% glycolic peels at a beauty clinic.

I used Murad Pigment Lightening Gel for 2 weeks in order to help prepare my skin for these peels. If you choose to have peels, I would not recommend this product to prepare as it contains alcohol. There are better formulated products available. I found that it was a bit too drying for my skin.

The first peel I had was at 30%. After the peel the therapist did a Microdermabrasion treatment upon my skin. By the fourth peel they were using a 40% solution with Microdermabrasion.

I had experienced some improvement up until the fourth peel. These included: my skin being more moist, fresher looking, fewer blackheads and break outs. However, after the fourth treatment my skin reacted negatively

Starting 12 hours after the treatment, my skin became very puffy. By the next day I looked permanently flushed and it felt like I'd had a bad sunburn.I looked like I'd had one too...

I went to a dermatogist to find out what the problem was. He said that (with no doubt) the reaction was not to the glycolic as I had thought it might be, but it was instead to the Microdermabrasion. It took my skin 7 days to fully recover during which time I used Cetaphyl products. I found these products to be excellent. Now, that my skin has recovered the positive effects that I had experienced are still present.

Conclusions
I would recommend having glycolic peels but not in combination with Microdermabrasion.
