Nail Care Tip: MSM for stronger, retextured, faster-growing nails
|
submitted by James Herried, Fullerton, CA USA
Tip description / details: Based upon my personal experience, the supplement MSM works to build stronger, faster-growing, retextured fingernails and toenails. I've seen this in myself and several other people I know who have taken it. MSM is a source of organic sulfur, and, according to Dr.Earl Mindell, it makes hair and nails stronger because keratin (the protein that makes up your hair and nails) is rich in sulfur amino acids. I didn't start taking MSM for stronger hair or nails, but that's the "side effect" (if you want to call it that) that I noticed as a result of taking the supplement. And I've seen it in other people too.
As a bonus, sulfur is also needed for the production of collagen and other connective tissue, and your skin is actually made up of keratin also. Thus, MSM might be an effective way to counteract the "dekeratinization" of the skin that can occur due to the excess use of alpha hydroxy acids. And another bonus might be this: your body needs sulfur to produce glutathione, the body's principal natural antioxidant. So taking MSM might increase glutathione production in the body, but that's just a guess. I take 3000 mg of MSM a day, but at one point I had to take 4000 mg a day to completely eliminate the pain in my left shoulder, which was due to damaged connective tissue due to an accident.
