Skin Care Tip: Achieving good tolerance of Retin A
|
submitted by Brenda Merrill, Springfield, IL US
Tip description / details: As a nurse practitioner, I periodically will prescribe Retin-A for acne. It is important that patients are aware to use no more than one pea-sized drop of cream, and initially to titrate the use generally from one time every other day to daily, if tolerated. I also suggest various non-comedogenic moisturizers to use with the product. The patients also need to realize that the acne may appear to worsen initially for up to one month. I have them recheck at that time to ensure that they are still using the product. They also are advised to call me if they really feel they need to stop the medicine. It is at this point that I can remind them of the cleansing routine--steps often omitted in the teen population. This usually is enough to get them "over the hump" and to the point of improvement and thus, satisfaction.
