My heels were so cracked and dry, that when I stepped on a stone, they got a deep cut and bled. My dermatologist recommended an expensive cream for them. They never really got soft, but stayed cracked and dry as always. Months later at a spa, the technician told me that I should exfoliate my feet with the little flat foot buffer that you always see used in pedicures and that can be found at any drug store. She said I should buff at least twice a week and moisture nightly with good skin cream, not lotion, and put socks on afterward. The idea is that buffing exfoliates and allows the cream to penetrate. Cream cannot penetrate dead layers of skin. Dermatologists should tell patients that, but mine did not. I bought an expensive diamond scrubbing feet buffer at the spa for about $48. It will last forever and is one of the best beauty items I have ever bought. My feet now are as soft as baby feet! I think the less expensive buffers will work too.
