Skin Care Tip: Coconut oil healing/softening

submitted by Laura , New York, NY USA

Tip description / details:
I recently went to Hawaii and bought some pure coconut oil in the suncare aisle to try as a moisturizer. I began using it after my showers, smoothing it all over my entire body. The first thing I noticed (aside from the beautiful natural scent of coconut) was how quickly it was absorbed into my skin, without leaving any greasy residue. As soon as I smoothed it in, it disappeared and left a soft, silky feeling all over my body. But the thing that took a couple of days to realize was that the coconut oil was having a very healing affect on my skin. Before I went to Hawaii, my ankles had been itchy and irritated for months, leading to a vicious cycle of scratching and tearing of the skin. I had started using a medicine weeks before Hawaii, and noticed it was helping somewhat with the itching and healing of the scabs. However, once I started putting the coconut oil on all over, I forgot to use the medicine ointment on my ankles. Amazingly, by the end of my trip, my ankles were in better shape than they had been in months. By the time I got home, they were almost completely healed, and at this point I had ceased using the medincine completely. I continued to use the coconut oil, and my ankles have healed completely. I don't know what exactly the coconut oil did, but I use it faithfully to this day, and continue to reap the benefits of soft, smooth and healthy skin. I also use the coconut oil on my lips and on dry days, my face. I have found that it does not cause breakouts, so I feel comfortable using it on my face. Aside from Hawaii, coconut oil can be purchased in health food stores, sometimes in the skin care section, and sometimes in the cooking oil section. It is a little more pricey on the mainland, but usually runs about $8-$15 per 16 oz. If you're lucky enough to live in Hawaii, it is around $4 in the suncare section.
